Chinese New Year Celebrations – 22nd February

March 2, 2015

Chinese New Year 1

This was held at the Guildhall in Portsmouth in the company of the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and a large number of the Chinese community.  Proceedings began with being taken round some stalls to see some of the crafts and gifts made by local Chinese people.  It was totally fascinating watching a man carving incredible creations from simple vegetables e.g. carrots and turnips.  I then went into the main hall where we were treated to a feast of Chinese dishes and then performances on the stage by a large number of entertaining acts performed by Chinese and none Chinese performers who belonged to groups such as martial arts, dancers, and of course the traditional lion dance.  What a spectacle!

The whole of the performance was a kaleidoscope of colour noise and excitement.

I loved every moment.  Thank you to all the Chinese Community for inviting me.

Induction and Collation of the Reverend Canon Tom Kennar at St. Faith’s Church, Havant – 17th February

March 2, 2015

The Bishop of Portsmouth, The Right Reverend Christopher Foster, performed the ceremony at St Faiths.   A packed congregation was there to welcome Tom as the new vicar.  Tom knows the area extremely well already as he has been the curate at Emsworth in the past and I feel sure he will be a real asset to the church and the community along with his wife Clare.

Pancake Day Races – 17th February

March 2, 2015

Beautiful sunny morning but very cold welcomed me to the London Road Precinct, Waterlooville where this annual event is held.  A number of teams took part and it was great fun watching the competitors running and flipping their pancakes along the course.  Many of course were dropped which meant that not necessarily the fastest runners won the race.  I was absolutely delighted when the HBC team came second, well done to all of you who took part and thank you for making the event such fun for everyone!

Mayor’s Valentine Quiz Night – 13th February

March 2, 2015

A very nail biting evening was thoroughly enjoyed by 15 teams of 6 people who pitted their wits against each other to win the Mayor’s Quiz Trophy.    The winning team was  ‘Quiz Nunc’, coming second was ‘Marion’s Marvels’ and coming in last place was ‘No Shrinking Violets’!

The evening raised a total of £1,167 for my charity appeal fund.

Thank you so much everyone who contributed, not only the players but the Quiz Master and her team of markers; the facilities team here at the Council and the volunteers who provided the food.
