Opening of the Memorial Garden to the Hampshire Regiment at Serles House – Friday 1st August

August 7, 2014

Winchester Memorial 1

A very moving and poignant occasion. It is a tragic sight to see row upon row of tiny wooden crosses each with a poppy pinned to it placed into the ground by the cadets. One for each of the 10,250 plus soldiers from the Hampshire Regiment who died both during the First and Second World Wars. The occasion was attended by many dignitaries from the services and the County.

Havant Youth Sail Training Scheme Prize Draw – Saturday 26th July

August 7, 2014

I had the honour of drawing the winning tickets for the Havant Youth Sail Training Scheme Prize Draw. Unfortunately because of it being holiday time, there were no children present. However the draw had to take place on that day because the date was printed on the tickets.

It was a beautiful sunny day and it was a pleasure to meet up again with organisers of the Training Scheme who are striving hard to raise money for new boats.

Visit by Chernobyl Children – Friday 25th July

August 7, 2014

On the 25th July, I hosted a visit by 14 children from Chernobyl (ages ranging from 9 – 12) together with some hosts. As part of their visit, Tom McInally, the Mayor’s Attendant on duty showed them the Regalia and explained the history involved with the robes and the Mace (with the help of a translator). The children then tucked into squash and cakes/biscuits.

It is quite amazing that just a 28 day break away from their home environment before they reach puberty, can make a phenomenal difference to their expected lifespan. This is quite an eye opener for all of us!

Reception in Honour of Dame Mary Fagan DCVO JP – 24 July 2014

August 7, 2014

I was pleased, along with the Leader to host a Reception in honour of Dame Mary Fagan DCVO JP, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire at the Public Service Plaza on the 24 July.

The reception was in honour of her forthcoming retirement after 20 years as the Lord Lieutenant. Guests at the reception included representatives from various organisations and charities that Dame Mary has had an influence on in the Borough of Havant, including Off the Record, Angel Radio, The Rowans Hospice, The Bereavement Counselling Charity, Emsworth ‘Absence’ Memorial and St James’ Church among others.

It was a very enjoyable event with Dame Mary chatting and reminiscing with many ‘friends’.
