The Hayling Island 999 Day, which was postponed from the end of April due to the bad weather, took place today in glorious sunshine.

Organised by Special Constable Stuart Bland, and ably supported by his colleagues, the show featured stands from many different emergency organisations. These included the Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, Coastguard, Fire Service, RNLI and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

Also there was a display of Police cars, both British and American, from different eras. Dogs were featured by a Police dog handler and by the Lowlands Search Dogs Southern which is a voluntary search dog group who are available to the emergency services. Trained and accredited to National Standards; Dog , handler and support, search for people who may be missing or injured in urban or rural areas. The team work closely with Hampshire Search and Rescue.

Hayling Island Community Responders were also there, as was a Police fingerprint unit.

We were also able to meet a Red Cross volunteer who had been chosen to carry the Olympic torch. He had brought it with him, so we were able to see it at very close quarters.
