Today we were invited, along with other Mayors and Chairmen from both Hampshire and East Dorset, to the Civic Day, hosted by the Chairman of the new Forest District Council, Councillor Mrs Alexis McEvoy.
We met for coffee at the very impressive Calshot Activity Centre, where we were fortunate enough to be able to see three of the J Class yachts as they made their way into the Solent.
From there we went by coach to visit 17 Port & Maritime Regiment at their base at Marchwood. Whilst there we were given a talk on the various tasks which have to be carried out in different parts of the world, and then given a demonstration of the range of dockside vehicles which they use, plus some of the waterborne equipment.
After this we went to Exbury gardens for lunch, a ride on the narrow-gauge railway and a tour of a part of the large gardens, with a very interesting narrative by Nicholas de Rothschild, Grandson of the garden’s founder, Lionel de Rothschild.
