Civic Service May 13th

May 13, 2012

Today saw us at the Annual Civic Service which, this year, was held at St. George’s Church in Waterlooville.

A very large congregation was treated to a very good service lead by Father Mike Sheffield, with some lively hymn singing. Mike was unable to resist plugging the Waterlooville Music Festival which takes place from June 9th to 16th.

This was followed by drinks and nibbles in the Church hall and then home to get the grass cut!

Arts Trail & Europe Day May 12th

May 13, 2012

This morning, Elaine and I visited three venues of the Havant, Waterlooville and Leigh Park Arts

Arts Trail at Hart Plain Church

Trail. We first visited Making Space in Leigh Park where we were shown works by Tracey McEachran, Peter Levy and Kate O’Connell before moving on to Havant, where we visited Tom Bennett. Tom produces, amongst other things, the dioramas that can be seen, and played with, at The Spring in East Street, Havant. After this we moved nearer to home, and visited Hart Plain Church to see the works of the late Paddy Smith. Paddy worked in various mediums including paints, chalks, and wood.

Having the afternoon free, we decided to visit marine artist, Samm Mackinnon who showed us some of her paintings of fish and other marine life. We would have liked to go on to other venues, but we had to get home to get ready for the evening.

The evening event was the closing ceremony for Europe Day at Cowplain Community School. After some short speeches we were treated to a range of dance performances which was followed by a very nice buffet and then an extract from the school production of Hairspray.

Europe Day May 11th

May 13, 2012

Cowplain Community School was the venue for today’s launch of Europe Day. This event brought together school children from England, France, Germany and Poland. England was represented by Waterlooville, France by our twin town of Maurepas, Germany by Usedom and our other twin town of Henstedt-Ulzburg and Poland by Wierzchowo.

Having officially welcomed our European visitors, I was then invited to fire the starting gun for the beginning of a mass run around a course laid out in the school grounds.

After this I had the evening off to go to an Old Secundrians school reunion.

Fareham Mayor Making May 10th

May 13, 2012

Today Elaine and I went to Fareham for their Annual Mayor Making ceremony. This was our first official engagement as Mayor and Mayoress and it took place in Ferneham Hall. The new Mayor, Councillor Dennis Steadman, took over from Councillor Trevor Cartwright who has enjoyed a very successful year. We wish Dennis, and his wife Carole, every success for the year ahead.
